what I thought I saw is a book about people—a fantastically diverse group of people—and the way we see them. It’s about the mistakes we make and the stories we miss because we perceive the world through an imperfect and highly personal visual lens. It’s not meant to be conclusive in any way, but rather just a beginning to the conversations we hope it sparks in living rooms and classrooms, in bars and coffee shops, in offices and art galleries conversations that open our eyes a little wider to the fascinating what I thought I saw moments all around us.

I met some interesting and inspiring people as I read this book! I experienced genuine surprise as I read each person's story and discovered how their picture didn’t match my automatic expectations, which I didn’t even realize I had based on seeing their photo.Even though I have two children with visible disabilities which has helped me learn to withhold judgments of others, this book opened my mind to how often my first thoughts still have expectations about someone based on what I see. Then I remember the stories I read here and I stop my automatic thoughts.
This book left me with the hope that other people will read it, and other books like this, and learn to refrain from keeping incorrect expectations and judgments, too, so this world will be a kinder place to live.
These tender, well-written, eye-opening stories are presented next to a beautiful black and white photo of each subject of the story. Together, they help close the gaps between others and our self, which are created by our incorrect thoughts based on people's appearance or their life's circumstances.
The stories in this book can open the reader's mind, and raise their awareness, to how often they've been wrong about people they’ve met or seen in their own life. They can be inspired to change their conditioned behavior of automatic thinking and fill its place with compassion, empathy, and even love.
I keep this powerful book on my coffee table so everyone who visits can see the beautiful photos and read an inspiring story or two while visiting. Thank you Amy, Sasha, Zoe, and Peta for this wonderful, life-changing book!

This book has gorgeous photos and compelling stories, and it challenges you to think more deeply about everyone you see. It's not an easy read, but its gentle message of compassion and open-mindedness makes it a lovely gift for anyone you really care about.
Certainly thought provoking. i'm guilty of so many stereotypes. A quote I like is"You can love anyone, once you hear their story."
What a beautiful, thought provoking book. Each story was a compelling look at the lives of others that we'd likely have missed by our colored judgments. It's a great conversation piece. If everyone were to read it and emotionally absorb it, we'd all likely have reactions to others that otherwise might have passed us by. Do yourself a favor; read it and share it with everyone you know.
