Two detectives retire and are given a vacation to Gatlinburg, Tennessee as part of their retirement gift. They are traveling as part of a bus tour group, but shortly after they leave home they suspect someone has been murdered. One of the detectives (Cy) forgets he is retired and tries to solve the murder of someone whose body has not yet been discovered, while his friend (Lou) must continually remind him that they are now retired. Cy tries to sneak and solve the murder without a body yet being discovered, while enjoying the first vacation he has taken in over thirty years. Humor and mystery abound.

Another fun mystery in the Lt. Dekker series. Cy and Lou retire with a hilarious party from their fellow officers who send them on a vacation to one of my favorite destinations, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. But on the trip, Lou gets his messages that let them know their is a murder mystery to be solved, even though they are retired. Loved the details of their itinerary and I can't wait to visit the area again to visit the sites I missed. But until I get there, reading thru the book made me feel like I was there in person with Cy and Lou, enjoying the sites. If you haven't read the other books in the series, I highly recommend that you get them all. This author is soooo funny, you will be laughing all the way thru the book as you try to figure out, who dunnit!

Book 7 in the series and a great one too. Cy Lou. I have never been to Galtinburg so this one tells a lot about the sights there from Pigeon Forge to Cane's Cove. It is the 1st vacation the guys have been on in forever and it was a retirement gift from the Police Department. The guys are giving up being detectives but Cy is having a hard time turning it off. He is suspicious of everyone. He keeps looking for killers and of course there is a murder while they are there. Then some people disappear so Cy is in police mode while Lou keeps trying to distract him. Fun and excitement as Cy is questioned by the police there to see why he knows so much.
I love the Dekker Cozy Mystery series! They are perfectly written with a tongue-in-cheek humor. The novels are well crafted and do not stoop to using profanity or sexual situations. I was especially thrilled with the Gatlinburg setting as it is my favorite vacation site. The novel is stunning with the accuracy of the area and attractions. I could almost taste the pancakes and see the streams and mountains. If you have never visited Sevier County you will want to visit it soon . I look forward to the next adventure of the two detectives.
Not the most riveting “who done it” out there, but it does have it moments.

Lou and Cy recently retired from the Hilldale, Kentucky homicide division. Their fellow officers pay for a week-long bus vacation to Gatlinburg. Neither of these esteemed detectives have ever ventured out of their confines. You would say the duo are “old school.” They aren’t familiar with cell phones and are each given one to add to their retirement. With a little help from a teenager and girlfriend, they’re able to at least make calls, the occasional text and an odd picture or two. They board the bus and begin their first vacation, ever!

Even though they are retired, Lou is always looking for something amiss from the normal. Before long, his suspicions are supported when a passenger comes up missing.

To go any further would give away too much of the plot and its minor twists and turns. I’m not going to say it’s a page turner, but it will keep your attention.

A big plus, this is one of the few books I’ve read where there is absolutely no profanity.

Four Stars
Homicide detectives Lt. Dekker and Sgt. Murdock have finally decided to retire completely from the Hilldale police force and leave the detecting to others. Included in the parting gifts bestowed upon the two is a week's bus tour vacation in Tennessee. Once on the trip, Dekker is the one who seems to be having trouble letting go of his work as he sees suspects and possible murders everywhere despite Murdock repeatedly reminding him that they are retired and on vacation. Of course, when a body does show up, Dekker is ready and willing to help out with finding the needed clues to solve the case.

This cozy series drives me crazy with the uneven quality of the books and mysteries. This book, unfortunately, is not one of the better ones with most of the story taken up with details about places to visit, which restaurants are the better ones, and the attractions available in Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Dollywood. The murder mystery is more of an afterthought than the main event of the book.

The murder mystery itself is rather thin on clues that are available to the reader. For those readers such as myself who like to try to solve the mystery along with the characters, this is disappointing. The motive as explained at the end is rather thin as well with not enough background details about "why" of the case to be satisfying.

Not recommended unless you are planning a trip to the Gatlinburg area and would like pointers on what to do while you're there, or for those who just want to keep current on the activities and status of the regular characters in the series.
I LOVE the Cy Dekker/Lou Murdock adventures! After reading the first book in the series, 52 Steps to Murder, I viewed Cy and Lou as guys I would love to be friends with. With their retirement gift - a trip to Gatlinburg - these best friends have an experience that will draw you in immediately. The fact that neither of them have been on vacation adds to the adventure. You get to see Gatlinburg through their eyes, and since neither have done this before, seeing them experience places you can actually relate to is an adventure for you, too. Of course, with Cy and Lou you know there has to be a murder along the way. Trying to relax and enjoy their trip hits a few bumps along the way. In the end, the two best friends have a great vacation and help solve a murder(s). You won't be disappointed that you got this book, but I strongly suggest you read all the others in the series before you read this one.
